MAHAKAM FRESH WATER DOLPHIN

Discover the Last Freshwater Dolphins of the Mahakam River

Mahakam River Dolphin Explorer

For centuries, the Mahakam Irrawaddy dolphin, locally known as Pesut Mahakam, has shared the river with communities living along its banks. More than just a river animal, it has become part of local stories, traditions, mythology, and collective memory. The Irrawaddy dolphin is easily recognized by its rounded head and forehead, small eyes, short rounded dorsal fin, and smooth grayish-white body. Unlike many other dolphins, it has no prominent beak or snout, giving it a distinctive appearance. These dolphins inhabit coastal and freshwater environments across parts of Southeast Asia and northern Australia, but the Mahakam population is especially important as one of the world’s rare freshwater dolphin populations. Our journey is not only about searching for dolphins. It is an opportunity to experience the Mahakam River, understand its wildlife, and appreciate the communities and culture that have lived alongside these remarkable animals for generations.
